This week we have been discussing descriptive writing. We have been learning about how adding adjectives and similes can help to build a story that the reader can step right into. Yesterday we came up with some similes and adjectives that describe winter. We then crumpled up the paper to create snowballs and had a snowball fight with them! At the end of our snowball fight, each student had to find two snowballs and share what was written on them with the class. We discussed all the great similes and and adjectives that described our feelings about winter. We all had a blast! Check out some of our pictures from the event below!
*Can you think of any winter similes?*
*What do you like best about winter?*
*What is your favorite winter memory?*
Dear Mr. Avery’s class,
I really liked the blog Simile Snowball Fight. The words were very descriptive and I love snow! I learned a lot of new words from this. For example, jovial. I had no clue that was even a word until I read this blog and looked up the word in the dictionary. I really look forward to reading the rest of your blog.
Your Blogger,
Brielle
Hi Brielle,
Thank you for your comment! We’re really glad that you stopped by and checked out the Simile Snowball Fight! We had a lot of fun with being able to throw pieces of paper at one another and then seeing all the different similes that were written!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery’s class
Mr Avery,
I love your class blog! Going to school looks like tuns of fun! Amanda and her classmates appear to be gaining a lot from your teachings. The integration of technology and education is wonderful! Keep it up Amanda, her classmates, and Mr Avery!

Simile Snowball Fight was a great way to encourage everyone to improve the quality of their writing. Mr. Avery, may I borrow your idea to bring to work and share with my colleagues, who often write reports which could be greatly enhanced by a more thoughtful approach to the use of language , similes, adjectives, and adverbs! The concept of using rolled paper and tossing the “snowballs” around the conference room would certainly gain their attention.
Thanks for a very interesting blog.

Dear Mr. Avery,
I love to make an igloo and fight with snowballs. I also came up with the frigid, cold is like wearing short sleeves, and a shirt in Antarctica.
Sincerely,
Natalie
Dear Mr. Avery,
That was one of the funnest things we did this year. I hope we can do it again.
Sincerely,
Ben W.
Dear Mr. Avery,
This is my favorite winter memory, I was sledding down a hill and hit a jump. I went three feet in the air. It was so much fun!
Sincerely,
Marshall
Dear Class,
These are some great similes, alliterations, and winter stories! I’m so glad everyone came on here to share! I have a winter simile as well. The snow made the slope slightly slippery!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr.Avery,
My favorite winter memory is when I go sledding over my neighbor’s house but this time was a first. I was out in the blistering cold snow. We were sledding like there was no tomorrow. We finally went inside and we had hot chocolate. Then we went downstairs and played the best game. I was so sad when I had to go home. That is my favorite winter memory.
Sincerely,
Ashley
Dear Mr. Avery,

Dear Mr. Avery,
I thought of another winter simile, the snow was as soft as a puppy. My favorite winter memory was when my brother and dad built a chair out of snow. My favorite thing about the winter season is giving.

Dear Mr. Avery,
I came up with an alliteration. The jovial J was singing jingles to Jenny.

Dear Mr. Avery,
Another winter simile that I thought of is the winter air is as frigid as an ice cube.
Sincerely,

@Tristan – That sounds like so much fun! I wonder what it would be like to live inside of an igloo? I’m thinking that it might be kind of cold. What do you think?
@Ashley – I’m glad you enjoyed our snowball fight. We’ll have to do it again sometime. It’s a great winter activity while staying nice and warm inside!
@Emily – I used to love building snow forts. It sounds like you and your dad had a lot of fun. I hope we get enough snow this year so you can build another one!
Dear Mr. Avery,
My favorite winter memory is when on a snow day me and my dad built a big snow fort. I loved to go inside and it was like my own room!

Dear Mr. Avery,
I loved the snowball fight! It was as fun as the fair! Everyone had amazing similes and adjectives. My favorite part of winter is Christmas. I love Santa.
Great job Tristan! I loved the details. I thought it was funny when you wrote snowflakes are as small as a lowercase o!
Sincerely,
Ashley
Dear Mr. Avery,
My winter memory is that my brother Brett always built Taite and I an igloo. That was fun to go in and play! The things I like best are building snowmen and snow angels. I think that snowflakes are as small as a lowercase o.
Sincerly,
Tristan B.
