In math, we’ve been working with fractions! A fraction can be used to show a part of a whole. For example, we could use a fraction to show how many pieces of the circle are shaded in below.

3 parts out of 4 are shaded in

3 parts out of 4 are shaded in

The circle is split into four equal pieces. The total number of pieces in the whole is called the denominator. That is the number that goes on the bottom of a fraction. Three of the pieces are shaded in. The number of pieces shaded in is called the numerator. That number goes on top of the fraction. When put together, we get the fraction three-fourths.

The numerator goes on top. The denominator goes on the bottom.

The numerator goes on top. The denominator goes on the bottom.

In order to help us remember important information about fractions, we created a video. Listen for important vocabulary words such as numerator, denominator, whole, and parts of a whole.
