The Avery Bunch

6th Grade Class

Math Movie Network: Introducing Your Hosts

We’re back for another year! The buses have pulled up for the first time. Students have walked into their new classes for the first time. And we’ve filmed videos for the first time!

Last year, we had our News Teams 4, 5, 6, and 7 to represent our various projects. This year, we’ll be sharing the Math Movie Network, a network built for students to share math tutorials with you!

Students will be creating various math videos throughout covering a variety of topics. They will be similar to videos we produced last year such as Elapsed Time Number-line, Finding Area, and The Avery Bunch. These can be used as review or to introduce new topics!

A network can’t be complete without it’s stars though. So, without further ado, I introduce to you, your hosts for the 2011-12 school year!

We look forward to sharing our work with you this year!

*What would you like to see math videos about this year?*

*Do you have any suggestion for a video we could make?*

  1. Dear Mr Avery and class,

First day, first videos – what a great start to the year. You’ve started as you mean to go on.
I’ll be very interested to see your videos as you make them, although I think the math concepts will be beyond my Year 1/2/3 students. (They are only aged 6 and 7).
I do like to pass on good links to older classes at our school, so I’m sure I’ll be recommending that they watch your programs!

    Have a great year.

    From,
    Mrs McKenzie in New Zealand

    • Dear Mrs. McKenzie,

Thank you so much for visiting our blog. You were one of the first people to see the new videos that were posted yesterday. We will be making lots of videos for the Math Movie Network this year. We really appreciate you looking at our videos and we hope you continue to visit our blog throughout the year.

      Sincerely
      Will G.

  2. Dear Mr. Avery,

I really like those videos. I was wondering, are we going to make a decimal video this year?

    Sincerely,

    Kirstyn M.

  3. WOW!
Maths Movie Network looks stunning. I hope to be able to check in and see what’s happening.
I always found one of the best ways of learning maths is to try to explain how it is done to others. It makes you think about what is being done.
The best start would be to explain what you are now doing in class so new viewers can understand the idea behind Maths Network. This may draw in requests for a topic to be covered or, through comments, let you know you’re helping others.
Great start to a great idea.

    • Dear Mrs. Mannell,

Thank you for the wonderful comment. I also think the Math Movie Network is a great idea. Mr. Avery has an endless mind with all of his good ideas. Thank you for commenting. I hope you enjoy our future videos.

      Sincerely,
      Hannah K.

  4. We are fourth graders in Iowa. We’d love to see some videos on making change, geometry, and place value – just to name a few! We’re looking forward to watching!

    • Dear Mrs.Thurn & 4T,

Thank you for visiting our blog, I’ll ask Mr. Avery and see what we can do for those videos. If we do them, you will see them on the blog.

      Sincerely
      Will G.

  5. Hello Mr. Avery and your class,

Welcome to your new school year! At Craigburn Primary School we are into Term 3 of our year. This term we are learning about Place Value in Maths. We are only in Year 1 but could you do a video on that? We would like to watch it. We found a video on YouTube about Place Value that we really enjoyed. We hope you are having lots of fun!

From Mrs. Kolenberg and Room 4 at Craigburn.

    • Dear Mrs. Kolenberg,

Thank you for your comment. I will try and see what I can do for you and your students. I think if we do
make that video, I’m sure you will like it.

      From
      Ryan.S

  6. Dear Ross Mannell,

Thanks so much for visiting our blog! There will be more math videos up very soon. It was a fun time filming them, every time we recorded one someone would laugh. In our class room we have a neon green wall for filming, you can click on it here.

    Sincerely,
    Taite B.

  7. Congratulations Mr Avery and the Math Movie Network hosts.
It was good to read about your new network on twitter. We are also a Year 1 class from Craigburn Primary School. In fact we are neighbours to Mrs Kolenberg and Room 4. As Mrs Kolenberg said we are learning about Place value in our classes. Maybe you could do a series of Math Movies for Mini Mathematicians sometime. We’d love to visit again and see more of your awesome blog.

    • Hi Jackie,

That you for the kind words. I’m hoping once we get through our curriculum and are able to make some videos about that, we can make videos to cover other topics as well!

I know our grade levels are so very different but I’m sure we can still find ways to connect throughout the year! I look forward to it.

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  8. Dear Mr. Avery,

I would love to be in many videos this year. It sounds like lots of fun! ♥

    Sincerely,
    Molly

    • Dear Molly C,

Thank you for your comment and this does sound like a great year. I’m really looking forward to it!

      From,
      Ryan S.

    • Dear Molly,

You’ll definitely be in some videos this year! Our introductions were just a small taste of what we’ll be doing. We’ll be making plenty of math videos. We’ll also be creating some videos in science as well.

It’s going to be a great year!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

    • Dear Molly,

Thanks you for the amazing comment. I also would like to be in more videos this year with you and the class. I think it will be really fun.

      Sincerely,
      Faith H.

  9. Dear Mr. Avery,

I had so much fun making the videos. I hope we make more soon. When Mr. V sent the letters saying I had you I was so excited because I had so much fun with you in 4th grade.

    -Kelsea

    • Dear Kelsea,

I’m glad you enjoyed making the videos! We’ll definitely be making more soon. I’m sure we’ll even be making a couple about decimals!

When I heard that I was moving to sixth grade, I was so excited because I knew I’d get to work with all of you again. We’re going to have a wonderful year!

      Your teacher,
      Mr. Avery

  10. Dear Mr. Avery,

I would really like to do graph videos this year! :) We could make videos about all the different types like bar graphs, line graphs, and pie charts.

    Sincerely,
    Fiona

    • Dear Fiona,

Thank you for the suggestion! I think we might be able to find an opportunity to do a video about graphs. Are there any types of graphs that you’d like to make a video about more than others?

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  11. Dear Mr. Avery,

Having a great day in school today, but what a miserable day outside! For the past three days its been rain, rain, rain! I just want some sun.:) But luckily it is going to be nice and sunny this weekend, for the Pep Rally on Friday and our first game on Sunday, 9-11-11. Have a great rest of the day and weekend! :)

    Sincerely,
    Alyxandra

    • Dear Alyxandra,

It’s so great that the sun is out, finally! I hope it’s nice out again next week because I have recess duty.

I hope the Pep Rally and the game go well today. You’ll have to let me know how it went!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

      • Dear Mr. Avery,

Our pep rally was cancelled on Friday because we needed more practice but today is our football game! I’ll let you know how the game goes!

        Sincerely,
        Alyxandra

  12. Dear Mr. Avery,

The videos are really cool. I’ve always wanted to learn how to do that with videos. When I was doing my video I felt like i was going to explode with laughter! I think this is going to be a good school year for me and I hope it is for you to.

From your new student that still has trouble spelling sincerely,
    Hannah K.

    • Hi Hannah,

“Ready to explode with laughter.” That’s great language you’re using there! I think a lot of you were ready to explode with laughter. As a matter of fact, a few of you did! I think we’ll probably see those again in a blooper reel.

I know it’s going to be a great year for all of us. Everyone’s been working so hard so far and I think we’ll definitely be learning a lot and having a lot of fun!

I hope you had a great weekend!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  13. Dear Mr. Avery,

Today is not a good day. I slept in way too late and its been raining for the past three days. I`m not happy right now. However, I’m glad we got to make videos using the wall and I can’t wait to make another one.

    -Sam R.

    • Hi Sam,

I’m sorry to hear you had a bad start to the day. I hope it got better as we went along!

I can’t wait until we make more videos too! Any topics you’d like us to make videos about?

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  14. Dear Mr. Avery,

I had so much fun doing the introduction videos and I look forward to dong more videos.

I was wondering if you are going to do a decimal video.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan C.

    • Dear Brian C,

I had fun doing the introduction videos, too. I hope we get to do a decimal video sometime this year. I also hope we will get to do a video about multiplying and dividing fractions once we get good at it. I can’t wait to make more videos this year!

      – Emma W.

  15. Dear Mr. Avery,

How do you work the green screen? Do you have to download software? I was just wondering so I can make my videos better at home.

    Sincerely,
    Taite B.

    • Dear Taite,

I’m not really sure how you use the green screen. I’m pretty sure there is a software you use to do the background. The green screen is pretty cool.
      Sincerely,

      Kirstyn M.

    • Dear Taite B.

Thanks for the great comment. About the green screen yes you do dowmload a software. I hope you can find the software and make your videos better but I think your videos are probly good. :)

      sincerely,
      Kevin B. :)

  16. Dear Mr. Avery and Class,

How do you do today? Do you have to practice a lot for the videos and how do you work the green screen? Do you need special stuff?

    Thank you for your time,
    Ed S.

    • Dear Ed S.,

I am doing great today! How are you? As you know since you are in this class this year we do need to practice before making the final. And I think for the green screen to work you need to download a software, but I do not know what it is. Have a great day! :)

      Sincerely,
      Alyxandra

  17. Dear Mr. Avery,

I am so excited to be going to see my dad do an Ironman. While he is gone for about thirteen to fourteen hours, we will be going to the movies, having ice cream and having a lot of fun. I’m just hoping he can cross the finish line!

    -Faith

  18. I love what your students are doing and I can’t wait to view some of their math videos this year. The introduction video was awesome!! I started reading some of their blogs too. I’m a retired 5/6 teacher and I am always excited to see how technology is changing the way kids learn and share their ideas with others.

    • Dear Nilah,

I’m SO glad you enjoy our classroom blog. It’s nice to know that people enjoy the blog! :P We will be sure to work extra hard, after all 6th grade is the highest grade in our school!

    Your 6th grade student,
    Tessa ♥

    • Hi Tessa,

Great job using some of the coding I taught you! It’s great to see the bold as well as some of the different smiley faces in there.

You shouldn’t be saying superb job to me though! All of you did a great job, especially considering that was your first videos you’ve done this year! This will be a fabulous year!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  20. Dear Mr Avery,

The videos look great! :D I’m so happy with the way they turned out, and I can’t wait until we make more videos! I also cant wait until we see all of them finished too!

    From,
    Jennifer W.

    • Dear Jennifer W,

Thanks so much for commenting on the blog!
I also look forward to more videos as we go along the year ★ Keep commenting!

      Sincerely,
      Taite B.

    • Dear Jenny,

I’m glad you finally got to see all of the videos finished!

Do you have any requests for a topic you’d like to see a video about? I’d love to make some videos that all of you would like to make!

      Your teacher,
      Mr. Avery

  21. Dear Mr.Avery

I think it is so cool how you can work the green screen. I also think how you have all of your classes get to make those films. All of the films you make are also amazing. I hope to see more of your films soon.

    From,
    Allison W.

    • Dear Allison,

If you remember at the end of fourth grade, you were one of the first ones I tried out the green screen with! I learned from all of you!

Just like with anything that you practice, I’ve gotten much better at making videos over the last couple years. I really enjoy making them and I hope all of you will too!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

    • Dear Allison W.,

I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the video Allison. We will be making more very soon. Thanks for the comment.

      Sincerely,
      Faith

  22. Dear Mr Avery and His Class,

I have a few suggestions for maths videos and here they are:

1: At school when you are just about to learn about a new maths area create a fun, interactive video to kick-start the unit
2: Also again when you start a new area you could create a quiz for them to take like an interview where they try to guess what the answer is, like a test to see what they already know
3: Another way is, you could ask the class to perform a play, poem or a song all about what they have learnt at the end of a maths Unit

Hope I gave you some good ideas,
    Tess

    • Hi Tess,

Thanks for all of your great suggestions! You are full of great ideas. I think we’ll definitely try to use some of those this year. You’ll have to let us know what you think when we post them!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  23. Dear Mr Avery and Class,

Hey guys, nice blog. GREAT you have set up a new post! Wait a second, 44 visits from Hawaii? How do you get heaps of visits like that?

    Sincerely,
    Ashton!!!

    • Dear Ashton,

I’m glad you enjoy our blog! We have had a lot of visits from all over! Sometimes we visit other blogs and leave comments for them and then they come and visit us.

Do you have your own blog?

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  24. Dear Mrs. Nelson,

Thank you for visiting our blog and thank you for congratulating us. I’ll ask Mr. Avery about the videos and we will see what we can do.

    Sincerely,
    Will G.

  25. Dear Ed S,

How do you do? I am as lost as you are when it comes to the green screen! The rest of the questions Mr. Avery will have to answer.

    Sincerely,
    Will G.

  26. Hi my name is Gisela. I am from Mr. Miller’s class. I want to tell you that I liked your Math Movie Network videos. They were fantastic!

    Sincerely,
    Gisela

    • Hi Gisela,

Thanks for visiting our blog! We really enjoyed making the Math Movie Network videos. There will be many more videos to come this year! I hope you enjoy all of them!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

    • Dear Gisela,

Thanks for the comment.I hope you enjoyed the video and we will have more on the blog very soon.

      Sincerely,
      Faith H.

  27. Dear Mr. Avery,

When you made the Math Movie Network in different videos, does that mean that we will have different movie networks depending on which one you were on?

    Emma~

    • Dear Emma,

We won’t have different networks. I know in fourth grade we had different news teams but this year will be different. The entire sixth grade will be a part of one Math Movie Network. Most of the videos will probably only have 3 or 4 people in them but they’ll all be a part of the same thing.

      Great question!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  28. Dear Mr. Avery,

I ♥ the class so far and will for the rest of the year!

I would really ♥ to make many more videos this year. Even though I wasn’t in your class two years ago when we were in 4th grade, every one told me what a great teacher you are! I’m very  to be one of your students this year!

    ~♥
    Molly :)

    • Dear Molly,

I’m glad to see you using some of our codes that I taught you!

I’m glad everyone thinks I’m a great teacher! I hope you learn a lot this year!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  29. Dear Mr. Avery,

I enjoyed making the introduction videos so much. I can’t wait to make more. Via Skype, I introduced my mom to our blog and taught her how to leave a comment. You are such a great teacher.

    Sincerely,
    Will G.

    • Dear Will,

I’m glad you shared our blog with your mom! That’s one of the things that I love about it, parents can come on and comment too!

I’m excited to make more videos this year. If you have any suggestions for videos, I’d love to hear them!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  30. Dear Mr. Avery,

I really enjoyed visiting your math video “meet the students”. My son, Will G, introduced your class blog last night during our Skype call. I look forward to seeing the class projects, homework and challenges. Keep up the good work everyone.

    Sincerely,
    Natalie G.

    • Hi Natalie,

I’m so glad Will introduced you to our blog. You’ll be able to visit all year and see some of the different things that we’ll be working on. I know we’re excited to create lots of great videos this year that cover a variety of topics in math and science.

      Thank you for visiting!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  31. Mr. Avery,

Me and my other classmates know how to video conference and would like to see what you guys did to get a green screen? We would like to see mostly everything on math that you guys will be teaching/learning. You guys should post a video about video conference.

    Clarissa

    • Dear Clarissa,

I am in Mr. Avery’s classroom this year! The green screen is actually just a wall that is painted green. I think he just uses some sort of software for the effects but I am not sure. Have a great afternoon!

      Sincerely,
      Alyxandra

    • Hi Clarissa,

We painted our green screen onto the wall. It worked really well!

What do you do when you video conference? Do you use Skype or something else?

Look forward to hearing from you.

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

      • Mr. Avery,

What we did for the video conference was use a huge TV that the school uses to talk to someone somewhere else. It had a huge webcam on top.

        Clarissa
(P.s. I love the green screen. You should go on my teacher page and put it in a comment.)

        • Dear Clarissa,

That is so cool! It would be so much fun to video chat with your school! How would we be able to connect with you guys?

          Sincerely,
          Alyxandra

  32. Dear Mr. Avery and Math Video Stars,
What a fabulous start to your blog this year! The Math Movie Network videos look so professional.
The part I like the best is when the students twirl in the chair to face the camera and get introduced! It reminds me of something I have seen on television some time.
I look forward to watching this year. I don’t teach 6th grade math, but I am one of your blogging buddies on the West Coast. I wonder if somehow you could make a fun video on all the time zones in the world. How do we figure out what time it is in South Africa or Australia or Los Angeles or London?
Whatever you make this year, I know it will be great!
    Mrs. Hembree

    • Dear Mrs. Hembree,

I am so glad you like our videos this year! There will be many more upcoming this year. And I do to love when we twirl around in the chair, we do look like professionals! That is a great idea to make a video of all the time zones in the world! We will see what we can do!

      Sincerely,
      Alyxandra H.

    • Dear Mrs. Hembree,

How are you? Thank you for your comment. I don’t know if we we will do any time zone videos but I’ll be sure to ask Mr. Avery. With or without the time zone videos I’m sure that it’ll be a great year.

      Sincerely,
      Bryan C.

  33. What a blog! I am blown away by how spectacular the presentation is. I dream to make my blog like that. I was wondering if you were interested in visiting my blog at:

I hope that one day my blog will be as good as yours!

    Freddie

  34. Dear Mr. Avery and class,

Welcome back to school! What a terrific beginning of the year! Way to jump right in! Your introductory movies look so professional! Are you sure these are sixth grade students? :-)

  37. Dear Mr.Avery

It was very exciting to make the introduction videos and I can’t wait to make more. This year I would like to see a math movie about fractions.

    Morgan M :-]

    • Dear Morgan,

It’s great that you liked the videos. We will defiantly be making more. Maybe we will make a math movie about fractions.
      Sincerely,
      Kirstyn M. :)

  38. Dear Tessa,

I agree that the math movies were superb. I also can’t wait to do more videos, I think that painting the wall green was a great idea but it can get a little distracting.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan C. :)

    • Dear Bryan,

I think the wall looks great in the room! It just adds a splash! It is a little bright and you can’t help but stare at it sometimes, but it is still great! I wonder what our next video will be…Can’t wait!

      Sincerely,
      Alyxandra

  39. Dear Mr.Avery

It was a lot of fun making the videos. What do you think the next one will the next one be about?

    Sincerely,
    Morgan

    • Dear Morgan,

I agree the introduction videos were funny, I felt like I was going to burst with laughter though! :D I do not know what our next video is but I can not wait to find out!

      Sincerely,
      Alyxandra

  42. Dear Mr. Avery and Grade 6,
What an exciting project you have planned! Your introductory videos look so professional!

My students are in grade 2/3. We were quad blogging buddies with Mr. Avery’s grade 4 class last year.

We love watching videos made by other students and are going to start learning about green screening soon. I know you are doing more difficult math than we will be, but I am hoping we can learn some tips for movie making from watching your videos too.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Watson
    Sointula, Canada

    • Dear Melody Watson,

Thank you! We take the time to make great videos and we all work together. It’s basically teamwork! I bet your blog with the second graders is amazing!

      Have a great day!

      Sincerely,
      Kirstyn M.

  43. Dear Mr. Avery,

Our second football game is going to be on Sunday in Scituate! I am so excited to BEAT them! It would be so cool if you could come to one of our games this year! :) Have a great day!

    Sincerely,

Today I got a really cool scrap book from my Aunt in Washington State. I had a lot of fun at the dance tonight, and at school today. When are we going to make math videos again? I’ll see you on Monday!

    • Dear Jasmine,

I love technology! I think there are so many wonderful things that you can do with it. When we were on the computers, we were looking at our blog, our wiki, and a website called Storybird. It was a lot of fun!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Avery

  49. Dear Mr. Avery,

The Math Movie Network looks so fun. I love to make movies and its so much fun to act and remember your lines or script. I also like to watch other people and see what cool tips I can gather to become better.
    From,
    Ariel:)
