Today we had the opportunity to Skype with two different classes during the day! Miss Girard’s homeroom had an opportunity to Mystery Skype in the morning and then Mr. Avery’s homeroom had their chance in the afternoon. Both classes had totally different experiences in trying to find the location of two different classrooms!
After going through all the rules and jobs of Mystery Skyping (see here or here if you’re not familiar with how to Mystery Skype), we got right down to work. A five hour time difference and a giant ocean between our class and the first class didn’t stop us from connecting. After going back and forth through many questions, we were finally able to pinpoint the other classes location and it just so happened to be in Middleham, England with Ms. Monaghan’s class. You can see a list of questions that we asked to help us pinpoint where they were located down below.
In the afternoon, the second class had an opportunity to search out the location of another classroom. This one just so happened to be somewhere in the United States. After some great teamwork between everyone involved and some amazing questions, we were able to figure out that the class was located in Hillsboro, Missouri. The class we were Skyping with? It happened to be Mrs. Venosdale’s class! Check out some of the questions we asked her class to see if they would’ve helped you figure out where they were located.
Thank you so much to both classes for taking the time to Skype with us! We couldn’t have asked for two better partners to work with!

Dear Mr. Avery,
I think mystery skyping is really fun! We should do it a lot throughout the year. We asked really good questions and they would help us find out where they live.
Sincerely,
Jenna K. 🙂
Dear Mr. Avery,
Mystery Skyping is really fun! Over the summer my cousin went to England and I skyped with her. It was really fun skyping with other classes around the world.

Dear Mr. Avery,
That was the first time I Mystery Skyped. I had a lot of fun. Even though it was my first time I felt like I’ve been doing it for years like I all ready knew what to do!

Dear Mr. Avery,
Of coures I Mystery Skyped before. I was in your class last year. Also, I was suprized to see you yesterday. I guess it was a good idea to give you a Panara gift card.
When is the World Fair? I’d like to come and see it. How is the project going? I hope it is going well.
How is school? Say hi to Miss. Girard and Mrs. Reynolds for me. I wish i was still in your class. Are you going to do the Angry Bird thing this year?
Love,
Fiona

I am a student in Yokohama International School in Japan. I really thought I want to skype during class to learn what other classes in other school in my school too. If you want to check what my school is doing, please check my blog!

Hi Mr. Avery,
I learned about Mystery Skyping through Mrs. Yollis some time last year. Two days ago was the first time I’ve experienced one. I had the privilege of doing the Mystery Skype in Krystal Holyoak’s 4th grade class and we connected with Nancy Carroll’s class. Nancy was a huge help with guiding both classes through it. We decided to go with giving clues instead of asking yes / no questions for our first time through it. The students loved it and had never done anything like that before. It was their first time Skyping, using a back channel (Today’s Meet), on Google Earth, … Several firsts.
Your questions help me think about how to do a Mystery Skype with yes / no questions. Thanks so much for sharing!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
Thanks Mr Avery’s class. I have just talked to Mrs Monaghan and seen her class post for the mystery skype – they were absolutely thrilled. They have a very small school and they work really hard, it’s wonderful that you help out your friends overseas.

Dear Mr Avery and Class
We LOVED skyping with you yesterday, it was fabulous! Louis wants to do mystery skyping every day, and Will wants a mystery skype day where we do mystery skypes for the whole school day, so you’ve certainly given us the bug.
We found it quite hard to locate you because we don’t know a great deal about American geography, but we certainly know more now than we did yesterday!
I am wondering which of your two mystery skypes you found harder to locate? Why do you think that was?
Sometimes we found it hard to understand your accents – did you find it hard to understand us, too? Have you ever Skyped with an English school before? In England, there are many different accents, and ours is a Yorkshire accent. It’s quite slow! You can tell where someone comes from by their accent – every town is different. Is it the same in the US?
