Solve some rate problems!
Okay, so that may not be how you’re used to that phrase going but that’s just how we started math today! Today marked the day of our Great Rate Race. We took part in a scavenger hunt around the school to solve problems involving ratios and rates.
We were broken up into four groups. Each group was equipped with a tablet, a clipboard, an answer sheet, and a pencil. We started out with a rate question, “If Emily buys 6 pounds of apples for $12.90, what is her unit rate?” We had to do our work out on the answer sheet, find our answer on the question sheet and then, using our Kaywa QR Scanner app, we scanned the QR code underneath it. If we had the problem correct, it gave us a clue to the next question. If we did the problem incorrectly, then it told us to check our work and try again.
We found problems throughout the school and then our last clue brought us back to the classroom. Once we scanned our final clue back in the classroom, that brought us to a Google Form where we had just a few more questions we had to answer. Once all groups were finished, points were rewarded to each team. The team that finished with the fastest time earned 4 points. The group who finished with the second fast time earned 3 points. The group who finished with the third fastest time earned 2 points. The team that finished with the fourth fastest time earned 1 point. Then, for every problem that had the correct answer and all the work was done correctly on the paper, we earned 1 point per question.
Once we tallied up all the points we found out that Jenna, Jacob, Heston, and Josh were our winners. They finished second as far as time was concerned but did all the work and answered all questions correctly. In all, they earned a score of 12 points! All teams did an amazing job though!

I loved doing the Great Rate Race it was so much fun. I t was the first time I got to go around the school with other kids without a teacher.It was awesome! I hope we can do more things like this throughout the year.

The Great Rate Race was so much fun. I love how we got to walk around the school looking for questions to answer. It was fun to see the different groups that would be right behind you trying to quickly answer the question. Rereading the question when you misread it. Getting that joyful feeling when you put the device over the correct QR code. Hopefully we can do a similar race. It would be very fun (like this one).

When we make the math movies, most people are just dying to be in it, and some people don’t mind. But thanks to Mr Avery’s marvelous job at the publishing and editing he makes the videos so entertaining. I see you already saw the “Avery Bunch” and the “12 Days of Blogging.” Well most people don’t look like themsevles now, considering that video was made in 4th grade. (we are now in 6th grade.)
that was a long time ago. However the 12 days of blogging is quite new. Everyone had a choice either they wanted to or they didn’t want. I wanted to and i’m actually in the video, I’m the girl who sings the 10th day. I reccomend looking at the video “Mr Avery’s Rap.” Mr Avery has mastered his rapping but I’m not so sure with his dancing in the post “To The Beat of The Drum.” Enjoy the blog and explore any videos, pages, and anything that is posted onto the blog.

The race was so fun. I had the best time when we walked(speed walked) around the school. Even when we got it wrong.
Have we found out what team won?
The pictures you took were very good. I’ve used the QR code scanner before just once before and that was when we did the pirate math.
I’ve did something similar to the race. At my birthday party we went around and one clue ( if you got the question right ) would lead you to the wrong one and you have to go back.
For example: we had a sign that said my dads old license plate in a bucket full of wet, soggy coco puffs. And someone had to stick their hand in the bucket to get to the next clue. I will never think of coco puffs the same way that I did.

I absolutely loved looking at your Rate Race and use of QR codes…it looks like it was a lot of fun for all involved! It was only yesterday I was reading up on the use of QR codes in the classroom and when I start back in February I cannot wait to use them with my students! I love the idea of the race you have used and if you don’t mind I would love to use your idea and adapt it to suit my class and topic etc?
