New Student Blogs!

Everyone has been doing a great job with the blog this year. Many have been taking time outside of school to write comments, reply to others who have commented, and have been visiting other blogs from around the world. Due to their dedication, I knew that these students would do an amazing job sharing their stories and connecting with others through their own blog!

Without further ado, I’d like to introduce our new students blogs!

3 Cheers for Tristan by Tristan B.

Ari’s Safari by Ariel D.

The Truth About Life by Emily B.

Jackie’s Journal by Jackie D.

Make sure to swing on by these blogs and give them your support. I know they’d love a few comments or a few hits on their ClustrMap!

New Student Blogs

Our Family Blogging Month wrapped up just last week. We had such an amazing response from friends and family! We heard from family members as far away as Florida, Texas, and even Norway! We had close to 400 comments just for the month of January!

Part of our Family Blogging Month was our challenge to see who could have the most friends and family members comment. The winner from each class was to win their own blog! We got each of those blogs up and running just last week. The students have been learning how to navigate the Edublogs dashboard, how to add widgets, how to moderate comments, and how to write a quality post. So now, I’d love to introduce you to the first two student blogs!

Speaking of Taite

Taite was at the top of the 6th grade for total comments received from friends and family members! She’s been an amazing writer all year and very deserving of her own blog!

Tessa Time

Tessa was at the top of Miss Girard’s homeroom for comments. She has been extremely active with the blog all year being one of our top commenters for the year!

With Family Blogging Month being such a huge success and our students playing such a pivotal role in the success of our blog this year, it was impossible to only give out just two student blogs. There were so many others who are also very deserving of earning their own blog. So, five other student blogs were also handed out!

Kidding With Kirstyn

Bryan’s Awesome Blog

Hanging With Hannah

No ProblEMMA

Sam’s Story

We’re all so excited to see what exciting stories they have to share with us! Please drop by and leave them a comment, some support, and they’d certainly all love to start adding up some dots on those Clustrmaps!

If you have your own blog, do you have any recommendations for our new bloggers?

What would you love to see these bloggers write about?

Natalie Visits Okefenokee Swamp

This is a student post written by Natalie

Over April vacation, my family and I drove all the way down to Brunswick, Georgia. It took two days to get down there. It seemed like forever but we finally got there.

On our first day there, we drove about 45 minutes from my grandparents house to the Okeefenokee Swamp. We started by walking through the gift shop. There were so many great things I wanted to buy but we had other plans first. Once we walked through the gift shop, we walked out towards a train. Right by the train there was a mother alligator with her baby. I couldn’t believe we were so close!

Our tour guide welcomed us on the train. He told us that the word Okefenokee comes from an old Native American word meaning trembling earth. I thought that was really interesting!

The train took us all around the swamp. We saw so many alligators. They were all different sizes. Some of them were huge! They were so close that I felt like I could reach out and touch them. I didn’t think that would be a good idea though! They were all so lethargic. They just laid there. Most of them didn’t even move when we went by. I think they’re used to the train now.

There's an alligator on my head!

After our tour, we got to go back to a tent. At the tent I had a chance to touch an alligator and a snake! The alligator had scales that were really bumpy but they were also soft. The snake felt really silky and soft. I wasn’t scared to touch them at all. My sister was though! She only just poked it. She didn’t want to touch them at all!

The trip was so much fun! If you ever get the chance, I would definitely recommend that you visit Okefenokee Swamp. I can’t wait to go back again!

*Have you ever touched an alligator or snake?*

Amanda’s Trip to Discovery Cove

This is a student post written by Amanda

I had a great day with the dolphins!

I had a great day with the dolphins!

Discovery Cove opened in 2000 as the first park that allowed visitors to swim alongside the dolphins.  They only allow a thousand people into the park so the animals don’t get stressed.

There are so many wonderful creatures at Discovery Cove such as bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, sting rays, eagle rays, exotic birds and too many tropical fish to count!

If you want to go to Discovery Cove, there are a few things you will need to know.  First, you’ll need to wear a special sunscreen that is okay for the animals.  You will have to wear a wet suit or swim vest.  You can’t wear jewelry or dangling strings.

He was so gentle!

He was so gentle!

The Discovery Cove trainers let the dolphins decide if they want to stay with the trainers or go off on their own.  None of teh dolphins are forced to do anything and they will still get their fish.  It’s all about the animals, not the visitors.  If a dolphin goes off to do their own thing then another one comes to fill in.

The area I swam in was called The Sea Horse.  There were fourteen dolphins training there.  There are 48 dolphins in all.  The dolphin I rode on is called Capricorn.  He is 40 years old.  He is known for his role in Jaws 3 and was one of the first dolphins to appear at Sea World.  Capricorn is nice and gentle.  He kept flopping over on his back to get a belly rub.  He acted much like a dog!

Swimming with Capricorn

Swimming with Capricorn

One dolphin looked different from the rest.  It was a hybrid.  A hybrid is like a mutt.  Usually, the common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins are separated into different pens.  That didn’t stop one common dolphin from jumping into the other pen though!

I spent the day as a trainer for the dolphins.  I learned how to teach the dolphins to do tricks and how to feed them.  My favorite time was when I swam on Capricorn’s belly.  I learned how much work it takes to train the dolphins to do tricks.

Now that I have been to Discovery Cove, I have a new respect for dolphins!

I'll never forget swimming with them!

I'll never forget swimming with them!

A Week as Crazy as Black Friday – Similes

This week we did many things.  We did fun activities like multiplication bingo, made our second Z was Zapped letter, and we made similes.  A simile is when you compare two words using like or as.  A few examples are:

Everybody did a great job.  In social studies, we are working on making our own project.  In science, we are wrapping up food chains.  In ELA, we are working on our at home project about Chris van Allsburg.  In math, we are working on graphs and geometry.  Have a nice weekend!

Can you think of any other similes?
