We recently had our spring concert. Every year, throughout the course of the year, the fifth and sixth grade classes meet every Friday with our music teacher, Mrs. Cardinal. They then put on two concerts, one right before our winter break and one in May. Every single time they do an absolutely incredible job.
The theme for this concert was “Songs of Disney.” When you think of Disney songs, there are definitely some incredible ones that pop right into your head. We put together a short video clip sharing a couple of our favorites. See if you can recognize what either of them are or where they’re from!
Through our blog, we have made great connections with so many classes from around the world. We’ve talked to classes from our neighbors to the north, Canada. We’ve talked to classes from other continents such as Europe and Australia. It’s been a wonderful experience getting to learn about different cultures.
A few teachers wanted to find a way to team up with other blogs in order to learn even more about classes in different parts of the world. With that, Quad Blogging was born. Quad Blogging is where four class blogs team up. Each week, the focus is on one of those blogs. Everyone from the other three blogs will visit that blog to learn more about that class, their school, and their community.
Here is the schedule of our blog visits:
This week you’ll have the opportunity to meet us! We’re two sixth grade classes with 17 students in one class and 15 in the other. You’ll probably find that you have a lot in common with us even though our schools are nowhere near one another! Watch our Animoto below to learn a little bit more about us.
Take a look through our blog. You may want to look at some of our favorite posts from the year such as Doctor Decimal, Pi Day, or Story Time! If you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask!

This week, we’ll be leaving comments for 2DD and 2MD from Victoria, Australia. Make sure to leave quality comments. Proofread for proper capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Don’t forget to let them know you’re from Mr. Avery’s class!
In the coming weeks, we’ll be taking part in a collaborative project called The Tale Trail. Classes will be joining together to write and illustrate a story through their blogs. It will start with one class writing the first part of the story and posting it to their blog. Then, the next class will read the beginning of the story and add on to it through their blog. We’ll continue until we get to the last class. They’ll put the finishing touches on it and wrap the whole story up!
Each class will have 3 school days to work on their portion of the story. At the bottom of each post, there will be links to the parts of the story that have already been done as well as the next part of the story once it’s finished. In order to read the whole thing, you’ll be taken on a journey through the blogs of all six classes. Down below you’ll be able to find the dates around when each class should be posting their portion of the story. You can also see a map showing the locations of all the classes.
Of course one of the most important story elements are plot, characters, and setting. The plot is what takes place in a story. The characters are who is in the story. The setting is when the story takes place. As of right now, all of that is missing from ours! We need your help in voting for what our story will be about. Use the poll below to vote for your favorite story topic. Voting will close on Saturday, May 5th. Then, check Mr. Salsich’s class blog next week to find out what topic was chosen as they kick off the first part of the project!

The past couple years have been filled with milestone birthdays for our blogging buddies! In the past year or so, Mrs. Yollis, Mrs. Morris, and myself all had big birthdays. Now, Miss Jordan celebrates one as she turns 30!
Miss Jordan teaches as part of 4KM and 4KJ in Leopold, Australia. We’ve gotten to know her as we’ve worked with her class on projects over the last two years.
Some of her blogging buddies put together a Wallwisher to send along some birthday messages! Click the “post a sticky” tab to leave your own!
We hope you have a wonderful birthday!
Leave Miss Jordan a birthday message by posting on the Wallwisher or by leaving her a comment!
No matter what the subject is, if we do something with artwork, it always brings cheers from the class. So when we had a famous artist come visit us on Monday, it definitely turned out to be one of the most popular presentations we’ve ever had!
Bren Bataclan, has been spreading joy to people throughout the world with his paintings. For years, he has been randomly leaving his paintings with a note saying that everything will be okay. How can that not cheer you up if you’re not in the greatest of moods? His work has had such an impact that he was even featured on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric! You can see that broadcast below.
While visiting us, he talked a little bit about the journey that he’s been through that has brought him to where he is now. Then, he had us try sketching some of his drawings! He primed us be telling us not to erase. He said there is no such thing as a mistake when you’re drawing. The great thing about art is that everyone’s drawings can be different but still be great!
He let us vote for which character we wanted to draw. Then, he showed us the shape he used to create the body. Then, he had us add on little pieces to give it more detail. Everyone tried their best and all their drawings came out amazing. In the pictures below, you’ll be able to see us focused intently and working hard on our drawings!
You can learn more about Bren by visiting his website at bataclan.com.
What do you like best about his drawings?
What’s a random act of kindness you’ve done for someone before?
As you may recall, last year we had the opportunity to join our first Quad Blog. Quad Blogging was created by Mr. Mitchell and has now taken off with hundreds, if not thousands of classes from around the world taking part every year. We had such a great experience with it that we decided to do it again this year!
With Quad Blogging, you partner up with 3 other classes. Each week, you focus on one class in order to learn more about that class, their school, and their community. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the similarities and differences between classes from around the world.
This year we paired up with the same classes that we did last year. The one difference is that Mrs. Devries has now joined forces with Mr. de Been. We’d like to welcome him to our Quad Blog and can’t wait to learn more about him and his class!
Below you’ll find a link to each class as well as the dates that we’ll be visiting them!
The time for the World’s Fair finally arrived. After all our hard work on our Animotos, animal interviews, habitat displays, reports, and everything they did for Miss Girard and the social studies portion, the day had finally come for us to share it with the rest of the school and community.
Once we were set up, all students had their own table to display all of their work. Our cafeteria had a pathway of tables for people to make their way through. At the end, up on the stage, we had a movie theater showing all of our videos that we had created as part of our project. During the school day, classes came through two at a time to ask questions and hear all about each student’s country and animal. At night, parents and other members of the community came in to visit to see all of our efforts at completion.
Take a look at the pictures below to see some of the students either preparing for the day or answering questions about their country and animal!
We wanted to share our entire day with you but we knew there was no way we’d be able to do that. So, instead, we created a time lapse video of our nighttime event. Our document camera took pictures every 3 seconds over the course of an hour and a half. Once put together into a video, our hour and half nighttime event can now be viewed in just over 3 minutes!
If you could choose any country to study, what would it be?
If you could choose any animal to study, what would it be?
As you saw with our last post, we’ve been hard at work recently preparing for our World’s Fair. Students have finished writing and typing their reports. They’ve wrapped up adding the last pictures for their Animotos. The last snow capped mountains and dense forests have been placed delicately into their habitat displays. The final step to the process was to film an interview with an animal expert.
For the final portion of their project, students were to be filmed as an expert of the particular animal they’ve been researching. They donned clothing representative of the climate that their animal lived in. They came up with a name for their expert. Then, they prepared for questioning. However, this wasn’t like any ordinary interview. The person asking them the questions is someone they knew very, very well. See if you can figure out just who it was who interviewed each expert.
A few of our interviews can be seen below. However, that’s only the beginning of them. The rest can be found by clicking here. Then, tell us if any of the animals we researched live near you!
Have you ever seen any of the animals we researched?
Can you share some facts about your favorite animal?
